Fleetsmith handles app updates in three ways: automatically, through notifications, and through enforcement.
1. Background Updates (Automatic Updates)
By default, Fleetsmith will always try to perform any available app updates in the background as long as that particular app is (1) not open and (2) managed by Fleetsmith.
If an update becomes available for an app that’s currently in use and cannot be updated in the background, you can either remind your users to update the app with a notification, or enforce the update.
2. Notify users of updates
You can choose to remind your users via push notifications when their version of an app is out of date. This notification will be visible in the Fleetsmith agent by clicking the dog icon in the menu bar.
You can configure notifications by following these steps:
3. Enforce latest version
Fleetsmith will force quit outdated versions of on app—even if the app is in use—at a pre-determined deadline. You can set the minimum version to be installed and the date and local time of the enforcement.
When you choose to enforce an update, Fleetsmith handles notifying your employees via macOS notifications to ensure they have enough time to prepare to stop using the app! We also give your employees the option to install or update early, so that they can install at a time that’s more convenient for them.

🌟Why can’t I sent an enforcement date sooner than 2 days in the future? Is there a way to immediately force app updates? 🌟
We chose not to build immediate enforcement into Fleetsmith because of the potential disruption to your employees—we want to make sure they have at least two days notice before their device or app is forcibly rebooted.
That being said, we do recognize the value of immediate enforcement in the event of a high-priority security patch. However, we want to make sure that if we build this functionality, we follow the principle of “usable security,” and do it in a way that maintains a balance between employee experience and corporate security. So if/when we do build this functionality, you can count on us to do it thoughtfully.
🌟When will the latest versions of an app be available in the Fleetsmith Catalog? 🌟
The latest version of an app will become available in the Fleetsmith Catalog within two business days of its release.
