Welcome to Fleetsmith! We’re excited to help you manage your company’s Macs. Let’s get started:
The below steps mimic the product tutorial in your admin console. We're setting up your own device first, so you can learn the ropes. For an in-depth guide on deploying to your entire fleet, take a look at our Deployment Guide.
1. Download and install the Fleetsmith Agent
When you first sign up for Fleetsmith, you’ll land on the welcome screen:
The first thing you see is a button to download the Fleetsmith Agent. The Fleetsmith Agent lives on your employees’ computers (and your computer too!), and keeps apps and settings up to date automatically. If you enforce an app, it will notify your employees before force-quitting the app or restarting their computer too. Fleetsmith handles it all, and gives you the power to make changes online at <your domain>.fleetsmith.com and then have them rapidly enforced on all of your teams’ devices, world-wide.
Go ahead and download the Agent by clicking on the blue Download Agent button in the screenshot above. For your first Fleetsmith Agent installation, feel free to use your own laptop, a test laptop, or a virtual machine.
Once you’ve successfully installed the Fleetsmith Agent on your first device, it’s well on its way to being securely managed.
2. Approve your device
As soon as your device checks in, you’ll see that it’s ready for approval. Click Go approve your device:
If you installed the Fleetsmith agent on your computer, you’ll likely see that Fleetsmith automatically predicted it should be assigned to you. Otherwise, click the pulldown menu and assign the computer to yourself. Then, click Approve & Assign all.
Congratulations again! You’ve approved your first device, which both adds it to your Devices page and enables secure communication with Fleetsmith’s servers over the internet. Here’s your Devices page:
3. Manage an app
We'll start with your Devices page again:
Click Go to the catalog and you’ll see a long list of all the Apps, Settings, and Operating Systems that Fleetsmith helps you manage. The screenshot below shows the top of the page:
Add your selected Apps & Settings to Profiles. A Fleetsmith Profile is a collection of managed apps and settings that you pick, which you can apply to any managed devices you want.
You can also enforce an app by picking a minimum version by a specific date and time. More information is available about enforcement here.
4. Import users
You’ve just managed your first device and and your first app. Things are about to get interesting… with G Suite!
We recommend you get started by importing a few more users for a pilot group, so you can test out the full power of Fleetsmith colleagues who love trying new services, and have some additional time to prepare the communications you’ll want to share with the whole company in advance of your full Fleetsmith deployment.
We’ll walk you through importing users now to help you understand the feature, and also with the idea that you can follow along and import the users in your pilot group.
In your menubar, click on Users, and you’ll see the list of all currently imported users:
Right now, there’s only you, because we imported you specially when you signed up. Let’s import the rest of your colleagues into Fleetsmith.
Click the Import users from Google button, and in just a few seconds, you’ll see every employee in your company available for import:
Once you’ve imported your pilot users, they show up next to you on the Users page:
Here, you can see a lot of information at a glance: all of your imported users, and your deployment status. In the screenshot above, the Fleetsmith Agent is deployed on 1 out of the 8 employees’ computers.
Ask them to install the Fleetsmith agent by first clicking the No assigned devices filter button and then clicking the checkbox next to the First column header to select all “No assigned devices” users. A Gmail compose window pops up, pre-addressed from you, with the “unmanaged” colleagues you just selected bcc’d, explaining a little bit more about Fleetsmith, and critically, with a link for them to download and install the agent.
As your colleagues install the Fleetsmith agent, you’ll be able to approve and assign their computers to them, since they’re now imported.
